Short answer
The PokerDataOS preflop trainer deals you preflop spots and gives instant feedback based on GTO analysis. For MTT it uses GTO reference ranges; for cash games, partial coverage of GTO references; for Spins, a heuristic engine. Every drill shows where its answer comes from and, when there is no data, it never invents a decision, an EV or a frequency.
What is a preflop trainer?
A preflop trainer is a practice tool: it shows you a situation before the flop (your position, your hand, what the earlier players did) and asks for a decision. When you answer, it compares you with a reference. Repeated hundreds of times, it turns ranges into reflexes, so preflop decisions stop costing you time and energy at the table.
Preflop is where the same spots repeat the most, which is why it is the part of poker that improves fastest with deliberate practice.
Where do the trainer's answers come from?
| Format | Source | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| MTT | GTO reference ranges | Answers come from reference ranges based on GTO analysis. |
| Cash | Partial coverage of GTO references | GTO references exist for part of the spots; where they do not, no answer is invented. |
| Spins | Heuristic engine | Answers come from heuristic rules, and the drill says so. |
Every drill shows its source, so you always know whether you are measuring yourself against a GTO reference or a heuristic. When a spot has no data, the trainer does not invent a decision, an EV or a frequency.
Is the trainer a GTO solver?
No. A solver computes the equilibrium solution of each spot and usually needs powerful hardware and a lot of study time. The PokerDataOS trainer does not compute solutions: it uses ready-made references so you can practice fast from the browser. How do you train preflop effectively?
- Pick the spot from your data. Start with the preflop leak the leak detector ranks first, not the flashiest spot.
- Practice in short blocks. Short, frequent sessions lock in ranges better than an occasional marathon.
- Read the source of every answer. Missing against a GTO reference is not the same as missing against a heuristic.
- Review your misses. Look for the pattern: do you always miss with the same hands or from the same position?
- Measure again. Check across WEEK, MONTH and 10K whether the deviation is fixed in your real hands.
Each plan includes a daily number of trainer spots; you can compare them on the plans section.
Frequently asked questions
Is the trainer useful for tournaments?
Yes. For MTT the trainer uses GTO reference ranges, and it is the format with the widest coverage.
What happens when a spot has no reference?
The trainer never invents a decision, an EV or a frequency. It only deals drills that have a sourced answer.
Do I need to import hands to use the trainer?
It is not required, but it helps: with your hand histories imported, the leak detector shows which preflop spots to drill first.
Is it the same as a solver?
No. The trainer does not compute equilibrium solutions; it uses ready-made references so you can practice quickly in the browser.
